    • Medicaid Transportation (800-836-9587, 800-259-1944)
  • Medicare (1-800-MEDICARE) Persons are eligible for Medicare 24-months after they receive their first Social Security Disability check or when a qualifying individual turns 65 years old.  The only exception to the two-year wait is end-stage renal disease and Lou Gehrig’s disease.  Patients with these diseases will receive Medicare within months.

  • Counseling
    • Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority (2400 Edenborn Ave., Metairie; 504-838-5257, 504-838-5700,  504-349-8833) offers adult and child mental health services and counseling services.  Payment options include: Sliding scale (with paycheck stub), Medicaid, Medicare, or private insurance.
    • Cope Line by Via Link (504-269-2673 or 800-749-2673) is a 24-hour emergency social service agency that provides services for persons in crisis including counseling and connection to community resources.
    • Counseling and Training Center at Our Lady of Holy Cross College (504-398-2168; 4123 Woodland Dr., New Orleans [Algiers]) offers counseling services administered by either graduate students or postgraduate students.  $15 a session, cash or check, no Medicare; reduce costs on case-by-case basis; appointment only.
    • Counseling Solutions CCANO Program (504-835-5007, Care Line: 866-891-2210; 433 Metairie Rd. Suite 106, Metairie) provides individual, marital, family, and group counseling by masters-level therapists.  Crisis intervention and assessment.  Free or low cost.
    • Family Services of Greater New Orleans (Harahan 504-733-4031, East Bank 504-822-0800, West Bank 504-361-0926) offers individual, couples and family counseling.  Programs include anger management, substance abuse, sex offender, domestic violence, victims of criminal acts, active parenting, and children in crisis.  Must be assessed at first visit.  Sliding scale, no one turned away.
    • Jewish Family Center (504-831-8475) offers individual, couples, and family therapy.  Sliding scale.
    • National Alliance on Mental Illness – NAMI New Orleans (Main number 504-896-2345; West Bank 504-368-1944; 1538 Louisiana Ave., New Orleans) provides mental health day treatment, supportive housing services and supportive employment services to adults with chronic mental illnesses.  Drop in clinic is free; Medicaid and other insurance accepted for additional services; walk-in or call for an appointment.
    • National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255) offers telephone assistance 24/7.
    • Trinity Counseling and Training Center (504-522-7557, 504-451-0465; 2108 Coliseum St. behind Trinity Church between Jackson and Josephine, New Orleans) offers individual, group, couples and family counseling for all ages.  Please call and leave message with callback information if interested.  Sliding scale (bring ID), no one is turned away; appointment only
    • Volunteers of America – Mental Health Services (504-485-0147; 127 S. Solomon St., New Orleans) provides support for persons with mental illness.  Call for referrals to any service, including case management and supportive housing for mental health patients.  Sliding scale.
  • Addiction Recovery
    • Addiction Help Line (866-300-6205)
    • Addiction Recovery Resources of New Orleans (504-780-2766; Metairie) offers an intensive outpatient and residential addiction programs as well as ambulatory detox.
    • Alcoholics Anonymous (504-836-0507, 504-838-3399;) can be contacted for information on times and places for daily free meetings throughout the New Orleans area.
    • Cocaine Anonymous (504-889-4357; Gretna) offers group classes to deal with and end addiction to cocaine.
    • Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse for Greater New Orleans (504-362-4272, 800-749-7444; New Orleans) offers confidential, call-in referrals for drug and alcohol abuse.  Drug education classes and evaluations are offered.  Services are offered on a sliding scale.
    • Louisiana State Office of Addictive Disorders (877-664-2248) serves as a connection to recovery services.
    • Louisiana Tobacco Quit Line (800-QUIT-NOW;) is a call line that provides smoking cessation counseling and referrals to other services in Louisiana.
    • Narcotics Anonymous (help line 504-889-8840, 504-524-4701;) offers meeting locations throughout the greater New Orleans area.  This resource offers group classes to deal with and end addiction to narcotics.
    • New Orleans Narcotic Treatment Center (504-347-1120; Marrero) offers mental health services for prescription drugs, painkillers, and heroin addiction.
    • New Freedom (504-888-8600) offers an intensive eight week program starting at $3,400.  Payment plans are available.
    • Responsibility House Social Detoxification (504-366-6217 Supportive Housing; 504-324-6265 Residential;) offers a seven to 10 day social detox program.  There is a client fee of $100.
    • Smoking Cessation with the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans (504-733-5539;) offers eight-week smoking cessation classes at various locations in the greater New Orleans area.

  • Hurricane Evacuation Assistance
    • Jefferson Parish Government-Assisted Evacuation and Return Process (504-736-6086; 504-349-5360) During a mandatory hurricane evacuation, Jefferson Parish residents without any other means of transportation will be transported to an evacuation registration site throughout the Jefferson Parish transit system.  Residents with special needs may be eligible for specialized transportation.  Call for more information.
    • Orleans Parish Government-Assisted Evacuation Plan (311 or 504-658-4000) During a mandatory hurricane evacuation, Orleans Parish residents without any other means of transportation will be transported to an evacuation registration site throughout the Orleans Parish transit system.  Residents with special needs may be eligible for specialized transportation.  Call for more information.
  • Emergency Shelter
    • CARE Center West Bank – Catholic Charities (504-347-0772) provides emergency shelter for unaccompanied women, men, or women with children and couples with or without children from Jefferson Parish.  Unaccompanied persons can stay for up to 45 days and families can stay for up to three months.
    • Covenant House (504-584-1111) is a shelter for youth (males, females, and families) ages 16 to 21.
    • Metropolitan Center for Women and Children (504-837-5400 or 888-411-1333) is a shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence and/or sexual assault.
    • New Orleans Mission (504-523-2116) is a shelter for men including overnight shelter, a drug rehabilitation program, and transitional housing for men who are employed.
    • New Orleans Women’s Shelter (504-962-6697) is a short or long-term shelter and case management for women and families at a confidential location in the Ninth Ward.
    • Ozanam Inn (504-523-1184; New Orleans) is an overnight shelter for men.  Must present ID.
    • Remnant House (504-362-7010; Gretna) is a fee-based rooming house that provides a room with access to shower, laundry facilities, and kitchen.St. Jude Community Center – Catholic Charities (504-931-6993; New Orleans) is a shelter for homeless, working women.
    • The Salvation Army (504-899-4569; New Orleans) is an emergency shelter for men and women.  Intake is from 3 p.m.  to 10 p.m. daily.  Morning departure by 6 a.m..  First three nights are free; eight dollars thereafter, vouchers available.
    • Veterans Administration Homeless Program (504-539-5745; New Orleans) provides housing referrals for homeless veterans.
    • Waymaker Ministries (504-328-8794; Harvey) provides shelter for homeless women with or without children for up to 30 days.
  • Housing Authorities

  • Food and Clothing Resources
    • Food for Families (1108 Barataria Blvd., Marrero, 70072; 504-340-5577) distributes commodities for individuals ages 60 and older or families with children under six years of age who are not receiving WIC assistance.
    • Good Samaritan Services (151 Sala Avenue, Westwego, 70094; 504-347-9393) is a food pantry available Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • Gretna United Methodist Church  (1309 Whitney Ave, Gretna, 70056; 504-366-6685) offers a food pantry available Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (call for appointment).  Dried goods distribution on first other day of every month from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
    • Hope for Others (985-264-5052) offers assistance for food, clothing, and medical supplies.  Contact: Johnny Huffman.
    • Jefferson Presbyterian Church (4450 Jefferson Hwy, Jefferson, 70121; 504-733-2090) offers a food pantry available the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 9 to 11 a.m.
    • Lantern Light at St. Joseph’s Church (1802 Tulane Avenue, New Orleans, 70112; 504-522-3186 ext. 25) serves lunch Monday through Friday at 1 p.m.  Hot lunch on Wednesdays only.
    • Ozanam Inn (843 Camp St, New Orleans, 70130; 504-523-1184) serves meals to the public daily at 6 a.m., 2 p.m., and 6 p.m.
    • Second Harvest Food Bank (504-734-1322)
    • St. George’s Episcopal Church (4600 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans, 70115; 504-899-2811) serves hot meals Thursdays and Fridays at 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
